If you only have a small group of chooks then portable chicken coops are a good option.
Portable or mobile coops can work for groups of 6 birds or less – ie for very small backyard set ups.
They allow your chickens to free range without the worry of them eating out all the available vegetation very and leaving the ground bare – as can happen with small permanent hen houses.
Chicken Ark
The chicken ark is a pen which is portable. You can move it when you like, and your chickens can get access to new ground every time it is moved. This eliminates the problem of erosion of your yard.

Eglu
A very popular coop that you can buy is the Eglu which is made by Omlet USA. It is priced at under $500 and can house up to 4 chickens. I find it a tad bit small, but if space is an issue then this can work. It is a good alternative to making your own, but is best if you don’t keep your chickens in it permanently (ie give them access to a more free range, whilst putting them in the Eglu for a few hours daily in another area).

Chicken Tractor
This is a really cute design, and certainly has that farmhouse look. The Chicken Tractor costs around $1000 and is made of paint-sealed wood with galvanized roofing. It has a run built off it and is easy to move around the yard. Suitable for 4 chickens.
What Will I Need?
You can make your own mobile chicken coop. You’ll need weatherproof wood for the frame, and it also helps to have some handles on it for easy carrying by 2 people. Wire mesh fencing is sufficient to enclose the coop.
How big?
Obviously the larger you can build the house the better as your chickens will have more space.
